Mission

"To actively pursue and participate in activities that have a positive impact in the community, create value and benefit for those we are serving, and instill a service mentality in Fellows."

Our Involvement with Common Goal

Giving back to the community and developing a sense of civic duty has become increasingly important to members of the Fellowship. Along with developing ourselves professionally we aim to become servant leaders by leading by example. To do this, each Fellow identifies an organization whose mission and purpose they feel strongly about and commits themselves to that organization for the year – this is known as their Personal Service Initiative (PSI). A Fellow’s PSI aligns with their unique strengths, skill-sets and interests. In addition to their PSI, each Orr Fellow participates in two events annually with “Fellowship Group Service”, once in the spring and once during the holidays.

One of the Service Initiative’s main partners is Common Goal.  Spearheaded by the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Common Goal is an active collaboration of educators, community organizations, and business leaders which aims to raise the graduation rate from 70 to 80 percent and decrease the number of high school drop-outs to 5 percent by 2012 in Marion County high schools. One of Common Goal’s six interventions is the mentoring program.

Common Goal mentoring is school-based, group mentoring of students at-risk of not graduating high school. The mentor’s commitment is two hours per month mentoring at a Marion County high school.  Orr Fellows mentor students at New Tech Academy at Arsenal Technical High School.
